Court contempt case against Prashant Bhushan: Supreme Court initiates suo moto proceedings

The Supreme Court had initiated contempt of court proceedings against controversial legislator Prashant Bhushan. The move was taken spontaneously (suo moto) by the court.

The reason given was that Prashant Bhushan had posted tweets criticizing some of the Supreme Court judgments. The Supreme Court was offended. However, the court did not specify which of Prashat's tweets offended the court.

The apex court had initiated contempt proceedings against Prashant Bhushan at 3.48 pm on Tuesday, according to Supreme Court records. Apart from Prashant Bhushan, another person was also charged with contempt of court.

There are two types of court contempt proceedings - civil and criminal. Prashant Bhushan was charged with criminal contempt.

Justice Arun Mishra, Justice BR Gavai and Justice Krishna Murari are scheduled to hear the case. It was also learned that a three-judge bench would conduct criminal contempt proceedings.

Prashant Bhushan was seen making more than one tweet mocking some of the Supreme Court judgments. After such repeated tweets, the Supreme Court raised the weapon of contempt of court.

Prashant Bhushan himself is also a senior legislator. He may have his own opinion on certain issues. But it is not appropriate to dismiss or criticize the Supreme Court's judgment. If you do not accept a verdict, you can appeal for reconsideration, but the verdict or the judge's thinking cannot be criticized on social media. For the last few days, Prashant Bhushan has been constantly tweeting about the Supreme Court judgments.
