Two Indian embassy officials who went missing in Pakistan have been released

Islamabad, Monday 15 June 2020

Two employees of the Indian Embassy in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, have been released and are on an Indian mission. India had strongly protested the alleged arrest of the two officials. News agency ANI quoted sources as saying that both the employees have reached out to the Indian High Commission.

Pakistani media reported that two Indian workers who had been missing since Monday morning had been arrested by Pakistani authorities on charges of running away after colliding with them. Official sources said the External Affairs Ministry in charge of the Pakistan mission was summoned and given a letter of objection on the news of the arrest of two Indian officials.

He said the objection letter had made it clear to the in-charge of the Pakistan mission that Indian officials should not be interrogated or harassed and that the responsibility for their security rested solely with Pakistani officials. Sources said that the Pakistani party was asked to send both the officials back to the High Commission in their government vehicles without any delay.

In fact, two officials went missing in Islamabad in the morning, after which India took up the matter with Pakistan's foreign ministry. Sources said both the officers left the High Commission in a vehicle for official work at 8.30 am, but they did not reach their destination.

The incident comes two weeks after India suspended two Pakistan High Commission officials on espionage charges. Abid Hussain and Mohammad Tahir, two officials of the Pakistan High Commission, were arrested by the Delhi Police while receiving sensitive documents related to Indian security offices from an Indian national in exchange for money. India then called Hussein and Tahir "undesirable".
