Trump annoyed that Gandhiji's statue was damaged during protests in America

Washington, Tuesday, June 9, 2020

US President Donald Trump has expressed frustration over the desecration of a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Washington during the protests.

A statue of Mahatma Gandhi was sprayed and damaged during protests across the country following the assassination of African-American George Floyd in police custody.

A statue of Gandhiji has been erected on the road in front of the Indian Embassy, which was demolished between June 2 and 3. The Indian Embassy has lodged a complaint with the local law enforcement agencies.

Asked about the incident, Trump said at the White House on Monday that it was "insulting." The Indian embassy has taken up the matter with the External Affairs Ministry for immediate investigation. It has also informed the Metropolitan Police and the National Park Service.

The Indian Embassy, the US State Department, the Metropolitan Police and the National Park Service are working to fix the statue. Last week two U.S. lawmakers and Trump’s campaign denounced the incident for defacing the statue.

Kimberly Guilfoil, Donald Trump's election adviser and national chairman of the Trump Victory Finance Committee, tweeted: "Very disappointing." North Carolina MP Tom Tillis, on the other hand, said it was "disgraceful" to see a statue of Mahatma Gandhi distorted.

"Mahatma Gandhi is the pioneer of peaceful demonstrations and showed him how much he can change," Tillis said. Rebellion, plunder and sabotage cannot make us a group.

US Ambassador to India Ken Juster has apologized for the incident. He tweeted last week that he was saddened by the distortion of the Gandhi statue in Washington DC. Please accept our apologies.
