Thousands of animals sacrificed in the name of faith to escape the corona at Koderma, violating the rules of social discrimination

Kodarma, Ta. 11 June 2020, Thursday

In the name of faith and superstition amidst the transition of Koro in Koderma district of Jharkhand, the instructions of lockdown and social distance became a joke. A large number of goats and chickens were sacrificed at Koderma to escape the epidemic in violation of the rules. The incident took place at Urva Panchayat in Chandwara Thana area where goats and chickens were sacrificed in the name of Ashadhi Puja.

The people who had gathered at the temple for several hours waited in the name of faith until their turn came and worshiped the mute animals they had brought with them to save the whole village from the corona. None of the people who had gathered for worship and sacrifice wore masks and the rule of social distance was grossly ignored. Wherever space was found in the temple, people joined in the worship in the name of superstition.

The temple was also attended by a number of migrant laborers from other parts of the country when crowds were banned due to the global epidemic. Panchayat president Virendra Paswan defended himself in the matter, arguing that goats are sacrificed every year in the name of tradition.

However, an elder of the village who was involved in the temple puja revealed that the puja was organized to prevent the transition to Koro and that representatives of the panchayat also took part in the preparations.
