Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Gilani resigns from Hurriyat Conference

Srinagar, Ta. Monday 29 June 2020

Jammu and Kashmir separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Gilani has resigned from the Hurriyat Conference. He announced this in a video message. Syed Ali Shah Gilani said he had distanced himself from the Hurriyat.

Syed Ali Shah Gilani said, "Given the current situation, I am resigning from the All Party Hurriyat Conference." I have informed all the elements of Hurriyat about the decision.

Syed Ali Shah Gili, 90, has been under house arrest for several years and has been in critical condition for the past few months.

It may be mentioned that this is the biggest development of separatist politics in the midst of the ever-changing political situation in Jammu and Kashmir since August 5, 2019.

Gilani, known as a senior Hurriyat leader, was previously a member of Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir, but later founded his own party, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat. He has also served as the chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat (Freedom) Conference, an organization of separatist parties in Jammu and Kashmir. Gilani has also been the MLA of Sopore.

In February, Kashmir's separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Gilani was rumored to be in critical condition and a tight security was set up in the valley. The All India Parties Hurriyat Conference said in a statement from Muzaffarabad (Pakistan Occupied Kashmir-PoK) that Gilani was breathing his last.

The All Parties Hurriyat (Independence) Conference issued an 'emergency' statement in Muzaffarabad (Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir), saying that all imams and people should gather at Srinagar, Idgah for the funeral.

On the other hand, New Delhi government sources said that Gilani's health is serious but stable. Hurriyat has announced that Gilani had recently expressed his desire to bury himself at Mazar-e-Shahada in Srinagar Idgah.
