People take to the streets in Kathmandu to protest Nepal's new map, voting on the bill today

Patna, Ta. 13 June 2020, Saturday

A vote on a new map proposal in Nepal will be held in the Nepali Parliament today (Saturday). Many areas of India are also included in this map. Demonstrations against the map have been going on in the streets of Kathmandu since Saturday morning. Earlier on Friday, several protesters took to the streets in protest of the government. Nepal's Foreign Minister Pradeep Gawli then urged the people to stop the protests through the media on Friday night.

Nepal's foreign minister said on Saturday that the country's parliament would decide on a landmark bill. That is why he urged the protesters not to take part in any anti-government demonstrations as such demonstrations send the wrong message. According to Gawli, they are going to provide an example by re-incorporating their land into the map. All the political forces have also shown solidarity by supporting it, so the common people should also demonstrate in the joy of passing the map by supporting the government and not against the government. However, since Saturday morning, people have been taking to the streets to stage anti-government protests in Kathmandu and their arrests by the police have continued.

Gawli said that on November 2, 2019, when India reorganized Jammu and Kashmir and changed the map, he came up with the idea of creating a new map. He tried several times to talk to Delhi about the border dispute but without any response, all the forces came together and insisted on changing the map.

Nepal's lower house of parliament on Wednesday unanimously passed a constitutional amendment bill on the country's new and controversial map, which outlines India's Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura.
