Manmohan Singh donates Rs 100 crore to Rajiv Gandhi Foundation after becoming Finance Minister

New Delhi, June 26, 2020, Friday

The Rajiv Gandhi Foundation, named after former PM Rajiv Gandhi, has come under fire after the BJP accused the Chinese embassy of donating to the foundation.

The BJP further said that money was also donated from the PM Relief Fund of the foundation. However, a new revelation has come out that even former PM Manmohan Singh had given Rs 100 crore to the foundation from the country's budget after he became the finance minister.

Manmohan Singh presented his first budget since becoming finance minister in 1991. This budget ushered in a new era of liberalization in India. However, in the same budget, he announced Rs 100 crore for the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation in five years in phases. This is mentioned in Manmohan Singh's budget speech.

It may be mentioned that in 1991, there was an economic crisis against the country. In 1991, the then Chandrasekhar government could not pass a full budget. On the other hand, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated the same year. Narasimha Rao's PM was again the government in the country. In which Manmohan Singh was made the Finance Minister. He presented the budget on July 24.
