Historian Ramchandra Guha has made a controversial remark that has angered Gujaratis.
Guha posted a statement made by British writer Philip Sprat in 1939 on social media today, saying that according to Sprat, Gujarat is economically advanced but culturally backward state. While Bengal is economically backward but culturally far ahead.
After Guha's statement, there has been a huge uproar on Twitter. On the other hand, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has also reacted by objecting to it and comparing Guha with the ruling British.
Rupani said that earlier there were British who ruled by dividing and now there are intellectuals who want to divide Indians. The people of India should not fall into their trap. Gujarat is great and Bengal is also great. India is one. Our cultural foundation. Is strong and economic ambitions are high.
Earlier it was the British who tried to divide and rule. Now it is a group of elites who want to divide Indians.

Indians won't fall for such tricks.
Gujarat is great, Bengal is great ... India is united.
Our cultural foundations are strong, our economic aspirations are high. https://t.co/9mCuqCt7d1
