After Paratha, the government will slap 18 per cent GST on popcorn

New Delhi, June 27, 2020, Saturday

The recent decision to impose 18 per cent GST on parathas became controversial. Now the government's favorite popcorn to eat while watching a movie in theaters has caught the eye of the government.

GST will also be levied on ready-to-eat popcorn. This decision has been given by the Gujarat batch of the Authority of Advance Ruling. Accordingly, 18 per cent GST will be applicable on popcorn sold in malls and restaurants. The bench said that to make popcorn, corn kernels are heated and mixed with salt and butter, so it will have to pay 198 per cent GST.

Earlier, the Authority of Advance Ruling had ruled to impose 18 per cent GST on parathas. In which it was said that khakra, plain bread are perfectly prepared things. While Malabar Paratha is different from these products. It requires processing to be used. So it should have 18 per cent GST on it.

However, now that popcorn has also come under the purview of GST, one thing is for sure, after the Corona era, the already expensive popcorn in cinema houses and especially in multiplexes will now become more expensive.
