Chandigarh, Ta. Tuesday 30 June 2020

Amidst the Koro epidemic, the country has been grappling with many difficulties. Now, earthquakes have been felt in Rohtak, Haryana. Its intensity is measured at 2.4 on the Richter scale. No casualties were reported so far.

The tremors were also felt in Jammu and Kashmir. Its magnitude is 4.0 on the Richter scale. The quake struck 84 kilometers east of Katra.

There have been several earthquakes in the country since the Corona epidemic. This has happened many times in Haryana. Delhi is like Haryana. Earthquake tremors pose a greater threat amid the Corona epidemic. Delhi is not ready to deal with the quake.

All three MCDs in the North, South and East sent notices to high-rise buildings 30 years or older. Now some of them have received audit reports and this report is very shocking. Cracks were found in the beams and columns of 90 per cent of the buildings. These buildings cannot withstand the strong shock of an earthquake. The South and North MCDA have so far issued notices to about 100-100 and the East MCDA to 66 buildings.

South MCDA has constructed 16-storey Modi Tower, 17-storey Pragati Devi Tower, 15-storey Ansal Tower, 17-storey Hemkunt Tower in Nehru Place.

Notice has been issued for audit. Notices have also been issued to Nafed Building at Ashram Chowk, Kamal Cinema in Safdarjung Enclave Area and Bharti College in Janakpuri.

In total, notices have been issued to about 100 buildings in the South MCD area. These include group housing societies, schools and commercial buildings. North MCDA has also issued notices to about 100 AC buildings in 6 zones. Apart from this, notices have been issued to 66 buildings by East MCD.

There are some areas in Delhi where you will be scared to see buildings built. There is no house in the colony that does not have cracks. One can easily estimate the condition of these buildings and their occupants if an earthquake strikes.
