A US biotechnology company has announced that it will begin testing a corona virus infection drug in humans in Australia. The company hopes to cure the epidemic this year.
Lead researcher of biotechnology company Novavex, Dr. Gregory Glenn said the company has begun testing the first phase. The drug will be tested on 131 volunteers from Melbourne and Brisbane.
"We are building the drug and vaccine together, thinking we can show that it works and make it available to the public by the end of the year," Glenn told an online press conference from Novavex's Maryland headquarters.
About a dozen experimental drugs are in the early stages of testing in China, the United States and Europe. It is unclear whether any of these drugs will be safe and effective, but some drugs work differently and are made differently, raising hopes that any of these drugs may be successful.
"We don't even touch the virus in the medicine we make, but in the end it looks like a virus for immunity," NovaVex said last month.
That, he said, is the way Novavex nanoparticles treat colds.
