The WHO has imposed a temporary ban on hydroxychloroquine trials worldwide

Geneva, Ta. Tuesday 26 May 2020

The World Health Organization on Monday temporarily banned the use of hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of patients infected with the corona virus. US President Donald Trump endorsed the drug for the treatment of corona patients. President Trump said he was also taking the anti-malarial drug himself.

"Hydroxychloroquine has been temporarily banned," WHO director Tedros Adhome Ghebrais told a news conference. The data received so far from the Data Security Monitoring Board is being analyzed and reviewed.

Tedros said a study published in the Lancet last week found that people taking the drug hydroxychloroquine had an increased risk of heart disease and even death. This is because there is currently a temporary ban on the use of this drug globally.

He also said that the temporary ban is only for corona patients and will not affect the rule regarding the use of the drug in case of other illnesses. At the same time, tests related to the treatment of the global pandemic coronavirus will remain the same. Hydroxychloroquine was licensed in the United States in the mid-1950s.
