A nationwide lockdown has been declared following the Corona virus, which lasted more than two months, during which time unemployment in the country has also risen. The agricultural sector has also taken a break due to the closure of industry and transportation. This situation is affecting the livelihood of the people. According to one estimate, unemployment stood at 9 per cent during the entire lockdown, up from last week. So one in four people has become unemployed.

This information was given in the latest figures released by the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). This figure is also a kind of record as if we look at the previous months, the unemployment rate has been claimed to be 4-5 per cent. In which due to the lockdown, it increased so much that it increased and crossed 8%. Unemployment rose in the country during the week of May 9. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate stood at 7.5 per cent. Which was 6 per cent a week ago. Unemployment averaged 9 percent during the entire lockdown.

During the lockdown, agricultural activities continued in the rural areas which resulted in people getting small and big jobs in the agricultural sector but the cities came to a complete standstill. As a result, the unemployment rate in the cities also increased. According to the CMIE, the unemployment rate in the city was 4.8 per cent and in the rural areas it was 7.5 per cent. Although the unemployment rate in the villages was many times higher than before, it was three per cent higher in the cities than in the rural areas. If we look at the percentage, one out of every four people has become unemployed. Which is by far the highest unemployment rate in the country.

Last year, when there was no Lockdown and Corona epidemic, there was a heated debate over a report by the NSSO which claimed that last year's unemployment was the highest in three years. However, the figures were not officially released. The data claimed that the unemployment rate in the country during 2012-13 was 7.1 per cent, which is considered to be the highest in three years. However, the current lockdown has broken all records and for the first time the unemployment rate has crossed 6 per cent. Earlier, on May 5, the percentage was around 8.
