Union Health Minister Dr Harshvardhan will soon take over as chairman of the WHO Executive Board. According to the WHO, Harshvardhan, who is playing a key role in the fight against Corona in India, could take over on May 22. He will replace Dr. Hiroki Nakatani of Japan as chairman of the board.

A proposal to include India on the WHO's executive board was sealed on Tuesday. 194 countries signed the resolution. The WHO's South-East Asia Group last year unanimously decided that India would be selected for a three-year executive board.

WHO officials said Dr Harshvardhan would be selected at a meeting of the executive board on May 22. Among regional groups, the chairmanship is given on a rotation basis for one year. It was decided last year that India's candidate for the first year, starting on Friday, would be the chairman of the executive board.

An official said this is not a permanent responsibility and the minister will only be required to chair executive board meetings. The executive board will have 34 members, technically connected to the health sector. The board meets at least twice a year and the main meeting usually takes place in January.
