Junaid Khan, terrorist son of Hurriyat chief Mohammad Ashraf, shot dead in Jammu and Kashmir

Two militants have been killed in an encounter in Srinagar's Nawakdal. One of them is Junaid Khan, the youngest son of Mohammad Ashraf Khan, chairman of the separatist group Hurriyat.

The other militant was Tariq Ahmed Sheikh of Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir Police DGP Dilbag Singh told a press conference after the encounter.

Dilbag Singh said Junaid was wanted in many cases. He was the divisional commander of Hizbul Mujahideen and was also responsible for terrorist activities in central Kashmir. Another militant, Tariq, joined Hizbul Mujahideen in March.

Both have been killed in an encounter that has been going on since Monday night in Srinagar's Navakdal. Weapons and ammunition have been seized from the spot. Mobile internet and calling services have been shut down in the area as a precaution.

A CRPF jawan and a Jammu and Kashmir policeman were injured in the firing, officials said.

Police cordoned off the area on Monday night and launched a search operation after receiving reports of the presence of terrorists, after which the encounter began, police said.

A police official said the encounter started late at night at 2am and there was no firing for about five hours after that.

After this, at eight o'clock in the morning the encounter with the terrorists began again. As a precaution, all mobile internet and all mobile phone services in the city except BSNL postpaid service have been shut down, he said.
