International Museum Day was started by the International Council of Museums in 1977. Since then, International Museum Day has been celebrated on May 18 every year. Museums around the world organize it in their own country. A variety of programs are organized to spread awareness about the importance of museums. In 2009, 20,000 museums from more than 90 countries participated in the International Museum Day. About 30,000 museums from 98 countries participated in 2010, 100 in 2011 and 129 in 2012.
