It is now clear that many states have allowed liquor stores to open to save the economy, which has been reeling from the Corona lockdown.
Governments seem to be forced to keep the shops open to generate tax revenue, despite the long lines of social discrimination.
According to an estimate, the states which are exempted from sale of liquor get Rs 1.75 lakh crore annually in the form of excise duty. The top five states earning from liquor are as follows.
UP 25100 crore
Karnataka 19750 crore
Maharashtra 15343 crore
West Bengal 10544 crore
Telangana 10134 crore
Thus the states seem to have decided to continue their revenue by selling liquor in lockdown.
