The Covid-19 epidemic has caused widespread outcry around the world, and most countries have imposed lockdowns to protect people from the onslaught of this dangerous virus. In India too, lockdowns have been implemented for the safety of the people so that the lives of millions of people are being saved and at the same time the biggest benefit is going to the environment.

All factories and businesses have been shut down due to the lockdown, according to environmental website Carbon Brief, which has reduced demand for fossil fuels due to competition in renewable energy and reduced power consumption in the country.

For the first time in four decades, India's carbon emissions have dropped since a sudden lockdown was announced in March due to the Corona virus. The study found a 15 per cent drop in carbon dioxide emissions in March and a 30 per cent drop in April. Researchers studying oil, gas and coal consumption estimated that CO2 emissions fell by 30m tonnes in the fiscal year ending March, the first annual decline in four decades.

Analysts at the Center for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) say demand for coal in the country is lower than before. Coal delivery fell two per cent at the end of March, the first time in two decades. At the same time, coal sales declined by 10% and imports by 27.5% during the period.

According to the daily data of the Indian National Grid, coal-based power generation fell by 15 to 31 per cent during March. In March 2020, annual oil consumption fell by 18%. In the midst of all this, the supply of renewable energy has increased and increased after the epidemic. This flexibility in the renewable energy sector shows that the sudden drop in demand caused by the Corona virus is not limited to India.
