History of Labor Day

International Labor Day began on May 1, 1886, when several labor unions in the United States went on strike to keep working hours longer than 8 hours. The city of Chicago celebrated Labor Day for the first time in memory of the martyred workers. It was then announced at the International Socialist Conference in Paris in 1889 that May 1st would be observed as International Labor Day in memory of the innocent people killed in Haymarket and would be a holiday for all workers and laborers. Since then Labor Day has been celebrated as a national holiday in about 80 countries around the world.

History of Labor Day in India

The first observance of Labor Day in India was on May 1, 1923 in Chennai. At that time this day was certified as Madras Day. It was started by Comrade Singaravelu Chettyar, leader of the Indian Labor and Peasant Party.

Demonstrations were held in front of the Madras High Court in India and a resolution was passed agreeing that this day should also be observed as Labor Day in India and a holiday for laborers should be declared. At that time many leaders were involved in the struggle for labor, the biggest name being Dattatreya Narayan Samant alias Doctor Saheb and George Fernandes.

Labor Day is celebrated in the name of the people who make the most special contribution to the development of the world. This day reminds us that if it were not for labor, the age of modernity we are proud of today would not exist. This is the day of development, prosperity and luxury workers. Labor Day should be thanked for working under the pretext of labor.

How is Labor Day celebrated?
