The government has extended the anti-dumping duty on chemical sodium citrate used in the pharma industry and imported from China for another five years, the finance ministry said in a statement. A statement issued by the finance ministry said the decision was taken to protect the interests of domestic industries.

Earlier, on May 30, 2016, the revenue department had imposed anti-dumping duty on sodium citrate imported from China and used in the pharma industry for five years. The deadline was Tuesday, May 14, 2020. As soon as this period expires, the government has imposed anti-dumping duty on sodium citrate imported from China for another five years.

Dumping is when a country sells its products in another country at a price lower than the cost price. This causes great damage to the domestic industries of the country in which these items are sold and threatens their very existence. To protect the interests of domestic industries, the government imposes anti-dumping duties on such items which make them more expensive than those found in the domestic market and protect the interests of domestic industries.

On April 30, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), after a thorough investigation, recommended imposing anti-dumping duty on sodium citrate imported from China for another five years. China's anti-dumping duty on eight items is coming to an end in 2020.
