New Delhi, 29 April 2020, Wednesday

The government is also experiencing a financial crunch amid the crisis on the economy due to the lockdown.

In these circumstances, according to a media report, the government could cut military spending by up to 40 percent. Although there is no talk of cutting salaries and allowances of the soldiers, the government is in the mood to turn the scissors on other expenses. If the government takes such a decision, it could have an impact on the process of modernization of the army.

A senior official quoted the media report as saying that the government could save Rs 40,000 crore if it cuts military spending by 20 per cent and Rs 80,000 crore if it cuts it by 40 per cent.

There has been such speculation before, which has been confirmed by this official. The government may implement its decision during the April-June quarter.

It may be mentioned that the government has already imposed a sufficient ban on all defense deals. Corona has also questioned the Indian Army's modernization program.
