New delhi date. February 17, 2020, Monday

The Supreme Court has directed the Central Government to grant Permanent Command posting to women in the Indian Army as well. That is, until now women officers were employed by the Short Service Commission for 14 years. The rule should be amended to give them promotion to the post of command or the colonel. Earlier, the central government had argued that it was not desirable for them to give a command posting given the physical and mental condition of women. But the Supreme Court rejected the central government's argument.

There are women in the army

There are already women officers working in the Indian Army. But as of now, he was recruited by the Short Service Commission (SSC). That means they had to retire for 10 years and 14 years if they got an extension. Giving a Permanent Commission means that they will not have to retire in 14 years. Additionally you will get command posting. That is, women officers would be able to take part in a war on the border, which was not possible till now. Currently, there are 1653 officer-level women in the Indian Army, which is 3.89% of the total officers.

The humiliation of women

The Supreme criticized the central government, saying it was an insult to women not to be given such a right. Women are advancing in different areas of the country and the name of the country is shining. Then why does the government object to the Permanent Commission in the Army? The government argued that the men in the colonel's position could not be accepted as they were all men in the military. In addition, the government also said that women could face physical and mental difficulties to work on the border.

3 months time

The Supreme Court has given the Center 3 months to implement this decision. The Delhi High Court had earlier ruled in 2010 that women should be given a Permanent Commission and given a command post. The Supreme Court has endorsed that decision. The decision was taken by a bench of Supreme Judges DY Chandrachud and Justice Ajay Rastogi.

Of course, that operation will be done under the Army's promotion policy. If a woman becomes a colonel, she has to take care of about 850 soldiers. Women are already working in various branches of the army such as medical, engineering, etc ..
