Records break 6,000 skeletons from mass graves in Burundi

During the excavation of land in the African country of Burundi, the skeletons of 6,033 people were found from six sites. Along with this, materials including bullets, glasses and clothing have also been found.

More than 6,000 skeletons have been found to be the largest ever since the government of Burundi launched a nationwide excavation campaign in the East African country. The bodies of 6,033 people were found during excavations at six sites in the Karusi province of Burundi.

In addition to this, the items including people's clothes, glasses, bullets have been found on which the task of searching the identity of the person has been started. A few years ago, the Burundi government decided to dig up 4,000 mass graves all over the country and find the bodies for which a Truth and Reconciliation Commission has been created.

The civil war began in Burundi in 1993, which lasted until 2005, and eventually the civil war ended following an agreement. It is estimated that three lakh people died during the Civil War.

In Burundi there were mass genocides in 1965, 1969, 1972, 1988 and 1993, in which most of the Hutu and Tutsi groups were victimized. With the election scheduled to be held in Burundi next May 2020, the United Nations has warned that human rights abuses may increase again in the country.
