Don't be 'chilled' in heat: AC temperatures won't drop below 24 degrees by 2020!

New Delhi, Jan 10, 2020 Friday

For those who want to buy a new AC in the summer of the year, the temperature of AC cannot be lowered to below 5 degrees The Government of India's Ministry of Energy has refused to allow the air conditioner (AC) to have a default temperature of 5 degrees. Hence, the AC machines manufactured later will not have the capacity to carry temperature up to 5 degrees. A notification has been issued for the star-rated AC of all the brands in this regard.

The government was thinking of implementing this rule for a long time due to rising AC demand and energy consumption. Now, this new rule has come into effect from 1 January. The default temperature setting in AC is expected to save Rs 5 a year. This rule has been implemented for Room AC following the recommendation of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) of the government making electricity saving rules.

The default temperature rule of 2 degrees will apply to all new AC machines that are designed and sold in India. The government believes that the implementation of the 3 degree temperature rule will save 3 billion units of electricity. Increasing the AC temperature by 5 degrees saves an average of 5 percent of electricity. BEE implemented Star Labeling in AC in the 5th, making it compulsory to 5.

According to one information, star labeling saved 7.7 billion units of electricity in the financial year 6-8, while reducing carbon emissions by 1.5 million tonnes. Japan and the United States also have temperature limiting rules in place to operate the AC. The default AC temperature in Japan has been 5 degrees Celsius. In some places such as California, USA, the AC temperature is not to be less than 5 degrees.
