14th Supreme Court hearing curative petition of Nirbhaya perpetrators

New delhi date. January 11, 2020, Saturday

Nirbhaya perpetrators have filed a curative petition in the Supreme Court. A hearing on this curative petition will be held on January 14 next. If this curative petition is rejected, the offenders could be sentenced to death on May 22. However, the other two offenders may also file a curatorial petition which may change the dates.

Supreme Court judges NV Ramana, Arun Mishra, R.F. Nariman, R Bhanumati and Ashok Bhushan will hear the curative petition of 26-year-old Vinay Sharma and 32-year-old Mukesh Kumar. This curative petition will be heard at 1.45pm on 14th May. Curative petitions are heard in the judges' chamber.

However, there are four offenders in the case in which two offenders - 31-year-old Akshay Kumar and 25-year-old Pawan Gupta - have not filed a curative petition. A Delhi court has issued a death warrant against all four criminals and will be hanged on May 22.

The 23-year-old Nirbhaya was raped in an on-going bus in Delhi which later led to his death. In 2017, the perpetrators were sentenced to death by the Supreme Court. The curator petition filed by the perpetrators is the final option to avoid it, after which they can also file mercy petition with the President.

According to experts, if the curatorial petition of both the offenders is rejected on 14th, then there are two other offenders who can file a similar petition and in doing so, they are trying to extend the hanging on 22nd. According to experts at present, the curative petition, the application against the death warrant and the mercy petition are the three options left to the perpetrators. If neither of them is valid, they will be hanged in time.
