Why has the Railways received the lowest revenue in 5 years?

Railways have a lifeline in a country with a large population and area. Railways are a great medium for inland transit. According to the report of the Maha Lakha Examiner (CAG), the earnings of Indian Railways have reached the lowest level in the last 3 years. The operating ratio of the railways has come down to 8.5% in the year 1-3. That directly means that the railway spends Rs. 5 to earn Rs.

According to Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, the implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission, increase in pension rates and social responsibilities are causing more money. With the implementation of the Seventh Pay Commission, it has spent more than Rs 3,000 crores which has worsened the economic situation. A large portion of the railway budget is spent in this. Apart from the operating loss, the cost of complying with the sanitation norms in the railways is also increasing. All these have an impact on the revenue of the railways.

Indian Railways is Asia's second largest and the fourth largest network in the world run by the government. In which more than 1 lakh employees are employed. Railways in India talk of railway reforms in the budget but this does not benefit the common man. Travel without railway reservation has become a symbol of hardship even today. People who travel long distances often prefer not to miss the train. General coaches lack the facilities for the poor and middle class people in the country. Under such circumstances, the burden of increasing the cost of railway operating costs is not surprising even if some of the fares have to be incurred as poor and middle class.
