The Delhi High Court rejected the plea of linking Aadhaar and Pancard with social media

(PTI) New Delhi, Ta. December 9, 2019, Monday

The Delhi High Court had requested to link Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp account with Aadhaar or Pancard. Rejecting the BJP leader's plea, the Delhi High Court had said that personal information of 80 per cent of citizens cannot be put at risk in the name of prosecuting 20 per cent fake users.

BJP leader Ashwini Kumar has filed a petition with the Delhi High Court to link social media accounts with Aadhar card or PAN card. The petition argued that 20 percent of fake users engage in harassing or other anti-social activities. A fake account can be closed automatically if a social media account is linked to Aadhaar or Pancard to prevent fake users.

Hearing the petition, the Delhi High Court noted that this court could not risk the information of 80% of the original social media users in the name of Sakanjo Kasavan over 20% fake accounts. Social media companies are foreign. If an identity card is attached to social media, its information will go abroad without any reason. It would not be appropriate to do so.

The High Court added that the court's job is not to research the law. It is the government's job. The court cannot take such action. If there is a need for that, the government should take action. The central government will take into account what rules and how many strict rules should be taken with regard to accounts linked to social media.

The job of the court is to comply with the law. Applicants have demanded the identification of identity card with social media in the Delhi High Court, arguing against the spread of fake news and fake information on social media.
