The danger of catastrophic floods all over North India

New Delhi, 31st December 2019, Tuesday

Climate change centers in Shimla were warning that the floods in the Sutlej, Ravi and Chenab rivers could cause catastrophic floods across North India due to the melting of glaciers around Himachal Pradesh.

On the basis of photographs taken by the satellite, the Center warned that the streams of water at Sutlej, Chenab and Ravi were causing excessive velocity.

The springs and waterfalls increased by 16 per cent in Sutlej's canals, 15 per cent in Chenab's canals and 12 per cent in Ravi's canyons. Its waters can descend into the plains and cause devastation in Punjab and northern India.

According to a report sent by the Climate Change Center to the central government, some of the lakes that melt the snow have more than ten hectares. In the year 2020, especially in the period between July to September, one must be very careful. Reflecting on how the Parchachu lake in Tibet in 2005 has receded in the area, the report said that global warming has melted snowflakes and wreaked havoc all over the world.

Overnight new lakes are formed in the canals of large rivers, and these waters cause heavy destruction when descending into low lying areas. The report cautioned that the central government needs to be constantly vigilant on the issue.
