State Governments Can't Stop National Register of Population: Union Government Spokesperson

New Delhi, December 21, 2019, Saturday

A central government spokesperson said that no state government can stop the National Register of Population. No law enforcement by the central government can stop the states.

This spokesperson made it clear that this register is part of the census and therefore it cannot be opposed. The Central Government has the right to decide whom to select as the nodal officer for the implementation of this law.

NPR's renewal is likely to be approved. A meeting of the Union Cabinet is to be held on Tuesday. On this occasion the issue will be presented to the Home Department and will inform the Council of Ministers for approval of the renewal proposal.

This NPR spokesman said that this was not a new thing. When Manmohan Singh was the UPA government in 2011, this kind of NPR was started before the census. So it is not true that the BJP is starting this tradition.

In 2010, he was questioned at home. This register was then launched and the census was started thereafter. The BJP government only renewed the NPR in 2015.
