Only one head of all three wings of the army: Rawat I CDS

Will also serve as a consultant to the Strategic Force Command on nuclear weapons

New delhi date. December 30, 2019, Monday

The Government of India today appointed the Chief of Defense Staff for the first time. A retired Army Chief, General Bipin Rawat, has been appointed to the post of CDS.

The name of the CDS has been under discussion for a long time. The name of Lt. Gen. Ranbir Singh, Army Chief of the Northern Command, was discussed for the post. The appointment of the CDS is considered one of the greatest reforms in the defense history of Azad India.

The CDSA has more strategic positions than the military. The task of the CDS is to coordinate between the three armies and the government. This post is important in a warlike situation. That is why the committee formed after the Kargil war suggested the appointment of CDS in the country. The government has accepted the suggestion after 20 years of Kargil.

According to the information presented by the government, the job of the CDS is to advise the government on defense issues. He will also advise on the crucial command, which is a very important strategic force. All nuclear weapons come into the country under the Strategic Command Force.

This command is led directly by the Prime Minister. An office has been set up for CDS in the North Block outside Delhi's Rashtrapati Bhavan along with the office of the Defense Minister and the head of the three armies. As per the government provision, CDS will be able to remain in office for 65 years.

Many countries, including the United States, have CDS or equivalent positions. There, these officers also take a direct part in the war. In India the CDS is unlikely to be directly active during the war situation. Countries with nuclear weapons usually hold CDS posts.

In India, the purchase of military equipment is very slow. CDS will also work to speed it up. The direct benefit of the CDS is that it can be coordinated seamlessly between all three wings of defense in a war-like situation.

At Kargil, there was a lack of coordination between all three wings of the defense. Due to this, the decision process was delayed. In the case of war, decisions have to be made at an accelerated pace. Under these circumstances the role of the CDS will prove crucial.

Does this appointment imply government aggression?

Through this appointment, the government has made several birds on a single pebble. India has given a message to the people that the government is not in a mood to compromise on security. Neighboring countries like Pakistan and China, on the other hand, will be able to understand San in this appointment. The message that the government is aggressive on defense and border security is consistent with the appointment.

Freedom suggestion

The CDG was recommended by the Cargill Review Committee. Earlier in independence, the Viceroy of India, Mount Bat, had also asked the CDS to recognize the importance of this post. In 1982, General VK Krishnarao also favored the CDS. Apart from this, various defense committees have repeatedly recommended CDS.

Will there be any difference in the performance of the defense?

The head of all three wings of the army is and will work directly with the defense minister. The appointment of CDS will make no difference to their performance. The CDS will not interfere with the workforce. All the heads of the three wings can also do whatever they want to discuss with the government and provide advice.

Difference Between CDS and Field Marshal

In India's history, three military officers have been appointed field marshals (five star generals). All three officers include Field Marshal KM Kariyappa, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw and Marshal of the Air Force Arjun Singh. These positions are an indicator of respect. Their extraordinary contributions were given with consideration. This did not make any difference to his career. While the CDS is the equivalent of the head of all three wings, there is no special honor. His performance is different from that of a field marshal. An officer who becomes a Field Marshal gets the status of a Five Star Officer, while a CDS is a Four Star Officer. All three army chiefs are also four-star officers.
