Due to the rise in Afghan onion revenue in the country, onion prices have taken a break in markets across North India including the capital Delhi. Onion wholesale prices in Delhi have seen a fall of Rs 15 per kg compared to the previous week.

The wholesale price of onion was Rs 30 to Rs 70 per kg in the Azadpur market in Delhi on Wednesday morning. In addition, the wholesale price of imported onion was soft at Rs 5 per kg as compared to Tuesday.

According to Azadpur APMC pricing list, the wholesale price of onion was only Rs 30 to 70 per kg on Tuesday while the revenue was 1,082.2 tonnes, of which 161.4 tonnes of onion was from foreign onion. Traders said onion prices were falling due to imports of onion from Turkey and Egypt (Egypt) in addition to Afghanistan.

In addition, the income of new onion crops in Maharashtra and Gujarat has increased sharply as farmers have started harvesting onion from their farm long time to take advantage of the price rise. Onion revenue has reduced its wholesale and retail prices, but onions are still being sold at a high price of Rs 100 per kg in most markets of the country.

Onion prices in the country had reached Rs 200 per kg a while back. The central government has decided to import more than one lakh tonnes of onion to impose onion prices, and a public sector company called MMTC has so far offered to import 36,000 tonnes of onion.
