No need for NRC in Assam if it allows re-scrutiny in Supreme border districts

(PTI) Guwahati, Tal. December 23, 2019, Monday

According to the Assam government, if the Supreme Court allows for re-scrutiny of 20 per cent of the draft-NRC pertaining to the border districts of Assam - the proposed National Citizen Register nationwide (National Register of Citizens - NRC) will need to be implemented in Assam.

BJP MLA Himmanta Sharma of Jalukbari Assembly constituency in Assam here today told reporters that the final version of the form which was released on August 31 was not acceptable to the National Citizen Register. It is noteworthy that the names of more than 1 million Assamese have been excluded in this register.

"If the Supreme Court accepts our demand for transplantation of 20 per cent of the population living in the border districts of Assam, then Assam will not need a National Citizen Register (NRC)," he said.

We are sure to detect a number of errors during the above re-verification process, he added. The Assam government had earlier submitted the affidavit seeking re-examination to the Supreme Court. Who was rejected.

The Prime Minister said yesterday that there is no plan to implement the NRC across the country. So we have to run in the Supreme Court. If he does not accept our request, we will contact the central government, ”Sharma said. The NRC was released under the supervision of the Supreme Court.
