In his long career of 37 years, Lieutenant General Narwane has also served admirably in areas of peace, conflict zones and constantly disturbed areas like Jammu and Kashmir. He has also taken charge of the National Rifles Battalion in Jammu and Kashmir and the head of the Infantry Brigade on the Eastern Front.

During his distinguished career, he has received the Service Medal, Distinguished Service Medal and Extraordinary Service Medal. In June 1980, he was commissioned an officer in the Seventh Battalion of the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment.
