The West Bengal government has received shock from the Calcutta High Court. The High Court has ordered the closure of government advertisements in opposition to the Citizenship Act and the NRC. The government will have to discontinue all advertisements until the next hearing.

In West Bengal, the government of West Bengal used to advertise the Citizenship Improvement Act and the NRC would not apply. The High Court has directed the government to stop advertising. The next hearing on the issue will take place on January 9. Until then, the government of Mamata Banerjee cannot give a single government declaration not to enforce the law.

The High Court clarified in the application reviewing the law and order on the NRC and CAA issues in the state that the government would have to shut down the media campaign immediately. During the hearing, the court also said that it would be allowed if the court deems it appropriate at the next hearing.

The petitioner claimed that people's money was being spent on protesting citizenship law and NRC. Because the government is spending this money from government treasury and it is not worth it. The petition demanded that the Trinamool Congress government should stop such spending.

The petition will be heard on January 9 on the issue of damage to railway property and review of law and order situation in the state. Only then will it be clear whether the West Bengal government can campaign for both of these issues.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted that people were opposed to the law and the matter had come out in front of everyone saying what the Prime Minister had said about this. The Prime Minister himself is making a different statement than the Home Minister in public.
