Even in November, auto sales slowed down by 12 percent

The auto sector, which has been going through a long recession, has suffered another setback. Total sales in the auto sector declined by 12.5 percent year-on-year in November.

Total sales during the April-November period declined by 16%. Production also declined by 13.75% during the same period. After the figures were released, auto sector shares fell one per cent.

A total of 17,92,415 vehicles were sold in November, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers data. During the same period a year ago, 20,38,007 vehicles were sold. Passenger vehicle sales fell 0.84 percent to 2,63,773 units in November. Passenger vehicle sales in November, 2018 totaled 2,66,000.

Sales of cars declined 10.83 percent to 1,60,306. That was 1,79,783 in November, 2018. Similarly, motorcycle sales were down 14.87 percent to 8,93,538. That was 10,49,651 in the same period of a year.

Total sales of two-wheelers also fell 14.27 percent to 14,10,939 from 16,45,783 in the same period a year ago. Commercial vehicle sales also dropped to 61,907.

Minister of State for Heavy Industries Arjunram Meghwal said that as per the Supreme Court order, by April 1, 2020, we have to go from BS-IV to BS-6 criteria and also to boost the electric vehicles.
