Violent storms across the country due to increased petrol prices in Iran

Tehran, November 17, 2019, Sunday

Violent storms have erupted across the country due to increased petrol prices in Iran. Iran's central government has announced at least 50 percent hike in petrol prices. As a result, protesters have also attacked petrol pumps and fuel-selling organizations.

The protesters were out of control following the police intervention. Nevertheless, violent incidents have been reported in several cities in Iran. In addition to the city of Sirajan in central Iran, there have been scattered demonstrations and riots in Mashhad, Birjand, Ahwaj, Gaksharan, Abadan, Khuramshahr, Mahashar, Shiraz and Bandar Abbas.

The sanctions imposed by Iran on the United States have had very adverse effects on Iran's economy. The Iranian government has cut huge subsidies on petros to get rid of this financial blow.

Iran is currently facing tight sanctions on oil exports. However, the government says that the revenue generated by removing subsidies on petrol will be used to help low-income families with cash.

In addition, according to the new rule imposed on Iran, only 60 liters of petrol will be provided to each cyclist. To buy 60 liters of petrol, he has to pay 15 thousand riyals (9.30 rupees) per liter and then pay 30 thousand rupees per liter if he wants to buy petrol.

Prior to this scenario, bicyclists received petrol at the rate of 10 thousand riyals per liter. Iran claims that due to the new petrol regulations, the government will earn $ 2.55 billion a year.
