More than 2,27,000 Indians in the United States are awaiting a family-sponsored green card, official figures say. Among the foreigners waiting for the green card, Indians are second after Mexico citizens.

Currently a total of 40,00,000 foreign nationals are waiting for the Family Sponsored Green Card. It is worth mentioning that the US government issues green cards to 2,26,000 foreign nationals every year.

Of the 40,00,000, 15,000,000 are citizens of Mexico. Since then, 2,27,000 Indian nationals and 1,80,000 Chinese citizens are waiting for the green card, the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.

Foreign citizens waiting for a green card often include relatives of US citizens. Under current law, citizens of the United States can sponsor their family members for a green card or permanent legal residency.

However, US President Donald Trump is opposed to the green card system and calls this policy a chain of immigration and wants to eliminate it. Opposition Democrats, on the other hand, are protesting against the abolition of the family-sponsored immigration system. For Indian IT professionals, there is a waiting period of more than 10 years for Employment Based Green Card.
