Gogoi retires as Bobde becomes 47th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

Ranjan Gogoi, who ruled on the Ram temple in Ayodhya, retired on May 17, following which President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath to 63-year-old Sharad Arvind Bobde on Monday, May 18.

Sharad Arvind Bobde has become the 47th Chief Justice of the country. They resumed their daily work by taking oath as Chief Justice at 11.30 am.

Bobde will remain the chief justice of the country for 17 months and his term ends on April 23, 2021. Bobde took Zuki's blessing at his mother's feet after taking oath at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The oath-taking ceremony was attended by Vice President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several ministers as well as former Vice President Hamid Ansari, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In addition, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court such as R.M. Lodha, T. S. Thakur, J.S. Kehar, Ranjan Gogoi was also present. Gogoi joined hands with some of the ministers at the ceremony.

The ceremony was attended by the Chief Justice of Bhutan Kunle Tichering, Jamaica Chief Justice Bran CK. Bobde was chosen as the most senior judge of the Supreme Court, only Ranjan Gogoi suggested his name which was approved by the President. Born in 1956 in Nagpur, Maharashtra, Bobde was also involved in the Constitutional Bench of five judges ruling the Ayodhya case.

As a senior judge of the Supreme Court, he has been involved in several important rulings, including Right to Privacy, Aadhar Card. Bobde became the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in 2012, after which he was made a Supreme Court judge in 2013.
