An angry teacher who did not withdraw the harassment complaint of an 18-year-old student studying in a religious institution, was sentenced to death by a Bangladeshi court on March 16 for not burning her living together with others.

In April, a gang of killers carrying a young girl at the Madrasa raid 164 km southwest of capital city Dhaka had burnt her to death on 18-year-old Nusrat Jahan Rafi.

"They will be hanged until the killers die," Tribunal Judge Mamur Rashid said in a verdict to stop the atrocities on women and children.

The incident triggered anger all over Bangladesh, resulting in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina being ordered to run the case quickly. He also visited Nusrat's family and consoled the murderer for appropriate punishment.

Police said during the investigation it was learned that the head master of the Madrasa, who is currently in jail, had told his disciples that if Nusrat did not withdraw the case, he would be killed.

In addition to the death sentence, the judge imposed a fine of one lakh rupees on all the culprits, which will be paid to the family of Nusrat. The convicts included two women, a family leader of the Awami Party and members of the seminary's governing council.

According to Bangladeshi law, the accused must be remanded to the High Court first to be hanged. Now the guilty will challenge the judgment in the High Court. The case can then go up to the appellate division of the Supreme Court. Nusrat made the first dying statement in which he said that his disciples had burned me when he did not withdraw the complaint filed against me.
