Congress boycotts BDC elections to be held in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar, Ta. Wednesday October 10, 2019

The Congress will not take part in the boycott of the BDC (Block Development Council) elections to be held in Jammu and Kashmir on October 24.

This will be the first election since the cancellation of the provision of special status under section 370 of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5.

The Congress wants to strengthen the democratic institutions and has never withdrew from any election, but today we are being forced to boycott the BDC elections due to the improper (unacceptable) administration of the state administration and the continued detention of senior party leaders in the Valley. Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress president GA Amir told reporters here today.

Mir was kept in his house in Jammu. He has recently been released from prison. He alleged that the state administration had deliberately raised obstacles for the major political parties to pave the way for the BJP to win in the elections.

It is noteworthy that the Congress and the National Panthers Party decided to participate in the BDC elections last week, despite dissatisfaction with the election planning period and current security situation. The Congress then demanded that the Election Commission of the state be made flexible so that its leaders could easily be defeated.

We sent letters to the candidates to take part in the BDC elections and some candidates also filled out nomination papers. However, on the last day of filing the nomination papers today, we have decided to stay out of the polls. Ms Mir added.
