43 days in custody of Chidambaram, notice to Supreme CBI

New delhi date. 4 October 2019, Friday

Congress leader and former Union finance minister P Chidambaram has filed bail in INX Media case. The Supreme Court has given notice to the CBI on this petition and has sought reply on the entire matter. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared on behalf of the CBI, has been asked to submit an answer in this regard.

The court will now hear the matter on October 15. Chidambaram, 74, was arrested by the CBI on August 21 in the case, and he remains in custody. A Delhi court on Thursday extended Chidambaram's judicial custody till October 17.

Since the arrest of Chidambaram, Chidambaram has spent a total of 43 days in custody, together with the CBI and the judiciary. He was sent to Tihar Jail for the first time on September 5th. On May 15, 2017, the CBI filed a case against Chidambaram.

He is being accused of corruption when he was a minister. However, Chidambaram has claimed that the allegations are baseless and there is no supporting evidence. Chidambaram, on the other hand, appealed to the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court order on Thursday. The High Court rejected the bail application which has been filed in the Supreme Court. A further hearing on the matter will now begin on October 15.
