Laws will become more stringent for offspring who do not care for their parents

The law will be more stringent in the short term than the Prime Minister's Office ordered the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to review the effectiveness of the existing law to neglect parents and abandon them, a source said.

As part of the amendment to the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act 2007, the ministry proposed three months instead of the current one-month sentence of abandoning parents or dealing with offspring.

The agenda for amending existing laws is at the top of the Modi government's second term. According to the current law, children have a legal obligation to provide food for parents and senior citizens. According to sources, the ministry prepared the amendment bill and sent it to the Prime Minister's Office for approval.

'Recently a meeting was organized at the PMO. At the meeting, the ministry was asked to evaluate the existing laws by a third party and review its effectiveness, 'the source said.

The draft law also called for the adoption of adopted children or stepchildren, grandchildren and grandchildren, as well as children representing legal parents, in the ministry's definition of children.

The current definition includes only sons, daughters, and grandchildren. Apart from this, the parents were also asked to pay Rs.
