Why is this day celebrated?

The World Tourism Day was started to celebrate the importance and popularity of tourism. The purpose of this day's celebration is to make people aware of tourism around the world. To make people aware, the United Nations World Tourism Organization has a different theme for World Tourism Day every year. The United Nations decided to celebrate September 27, 1980 as World Tourism Day. The reason that September 27 was chosen for World Tourism Day was because in 1970 the constitution of the World Tourism Organization was adopted.

According to data from the Ministry of Tourism, in 2017, 1.65 Arab local tourists visited different destinations. The tourism sector is growing in the country. The ministry said the number of foreign tourists has also increased. Last year, one crore five lakh tourists visited India. Tourists coming from abroad prefer to visit Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Agra and Jaipur.
