Hockey legend Dhyanchand was born on August 29, 1905, at Prayag, Uttar Pradesh, at the home of an army subedar. He was then awarded the gold medal at the World Olympics in 1932 and 1936.

The Indian team traveled to New Zealand and Australia in 1935, scoring a total of 584 goals in 45 matches played out of which Dhyan Chand alone scored 201 goals. After the retirement of Dhyanchand, his son Ashok Kumar was also named as a successful Indian hockey player. He participated as a hockey player in the World Olympics played in Munich in 1976 and in 1976 in Montreal. Ashok Kumar Singh scored the only goal of India defeating Malaysia by 1.0 in the final of the World Cup played in Malaysia in 1975.
