Fast track court opens in the country on October 2 for rape cases

Establishment of more than 1000 Special Fast Track Courts to be set up across the country to prosecute rape cases: The process will likely begin on October 2.

The Justice Department of the Ministry of Law has proposed setting up of 1023 fast track courts at a cost of Rs 767.25 crore. The center will provide Rs 474 crore under Nirbhaya Fund for one year in this work. The Center announced this funding on December 12, 2012 after the gang rape and murder of a student in Delhi.

The fund has been created to provide support to government initiatives and NGOs working for the protection of women.

As the Fast Track Special Court is scheduled to start on October 2, other related steps are also being taken, the Justice Department said. The Ministry of Women and Child Development had earlier said that 777 fast track special courts will be set up in nine states in the first phase, while 246 courts will be set up in the second phase.
