Fire in a building near Colaba's Taj Hotel: One dead

The fire broke out this afternoon on the third floor of the Churchill Chamber building near Taj Mahal Hotel, South Mumbai. Firefighters rushed to the scene in time to evacuate 14 people, but 54-year-old Geoff resident lost his life in the tragedy.

According to the incident information, a fire broke out on the third floor of the Churchill Chamber building at 12.17pm this afternoon. Within eight minutes of the fire, four fire engines, water tankers, rescue fire tankers and ambulances arrived at the scene and took rescue operations.

The four-story building caught fire on the second level and firefighters were evacuated by 14 firefighters from the third floor. Yusuf Panwala and 54-year-old Geoff resident Shyam Iyer went to GT for treatment immediately after they became unconscious. He was admitted to the hospital but died during treatment.

Panwala's condition is critical. Firefighter Santosh Patil, 29, also fainted in the rescue operation. Firefighters rescued 14 residents, including Geoff civilians, from the fire.
